A 30-year-old man was taken into custody in Vienna in early May after Hungarian authorities extradited him to Austria on the basis of an international arrest warrant. The suspect is alleged to have engaged in large-scale drug trafficking over several years and worked for a criminal organisation from the Western Balkans.

Investigators from the Eastern Centre branch of the Vienna State Criminal Office had been searching for the man for a long time. The group to which he is attributed reportedly uses encrypted mobile phones to coordinate drug trafficking and money laundering across borders.

Massive quantities of narcotics have been charged against the suspect. He is said to have sold 1.45 kilograms of cocaine and 3.45 kilograms of cannabis herb. He is also accused of possessing 42 kilograms of cocaine and 15 kilograms of cannabis herb. Furthermore, he is alleged to have offered one kilogram of cocaine and ten kilograms of speed. In total, the drug quantities amount to almost 104 kilograms.

Officers also found substantial evidence regarding financial flows. The 30-year-old is said to have handed over 96,650 euros to previously unknown recipients and received approximately 430,000 euros in cash from a buyer. Together with the drugs, this amounts to a value of more than half a million euros.

During questioning after his transfer to the Vienna State Criminal Office, the man exercised his right to refuse to make a statement. On the orders of the public prosecutor's office, he was remanded in custody.

Vienna investigators also established a connection to a case uncovered in 2024. At that time, an Austrian citizen, then aged 37, was arrested in Barcelona and is alleged to have sold 55 kilograms of cocaine worth approximately two million euros. He is also believed to belong to the same criminal group. The 30-year-old now arrested is said to have taken over cash proceeds from the Austrian's drug business before his arrest in 2024.

Further investigations against alleged accomplices are currently underway.
