Friesach in deep shock after fatal axe attack
A violent crime has shaken residents in the small Carinthian municipality of Friesach. In the night leading into Tuesday, a 27-year-old broke into his ex-girlfriend's flat. There he attacked the 30-year-old woman and her current partner (29) with an axe. The woman suffered serious injuries; her partner died in the attack.
The suspected perpetrator, the woman's ex-partner, fled the scene in the victim's car. Shortly afterwards, he deliberately drove into oncoming traffic on the S37 and died when his vehicle collided head-on with a lorry.
Mayor Josef Kronlechner described the mood in the municipality to MeinBezirk. He emphasised that such an occurrence in a small village where residents know each other personally hits particularly hard. The people are deeply affected; the incident is more than mere conversation fodder.
The mayor appealed to the population to remain composed and not to prejudge. He called for the community to stand together and overcome the difficult situation jointly.
