In a residential house in the Lower Austrian municipality of Münchendorf, investigators discovered the severely decomposed remains of an elderly woman in a sealed wall. The woman, who would have celebrated her 100th birthday in just a few weeks, had not been seen by anyone for several weeks.
The discovery was made last week after relatives filed a missing person report. Firefighters broke down the entrance door of the house. Specially trained police dogs immediately alerted. Investigators made the gruesome discovery in a wall at the entrance to the basement: behind brickwork lay the body of the missing woman.
The case is being handled by the murder commission. According to the Kronen Zeitung, as reported by Aktuálně.cz, the remains could have been in the wall for several years – possibly up to ten. The judicial autopsy has so far yielded no evidence of violence.
Detectives are pressing to question the deceased woman's son. According to the report, he has been abroad for some time and is considered an important witness. Neighbours stated that the man occasionally worked at the house but was otherwise not present in the town, which has approximately 3,000 residents.
Suspicion has fallen on possible fraud involving social benefits. It appears the woman continued to receive a pension. Why the body was concealed in the wall and who is responsible remain subjects of the ongoing investigation.
