In the south Austrian city of Friesach, a 27-year-old attacked his ex-girlfriend and her new partner with an axe. The partner died, and the woman was seriously injured. The perpetrator subsequently crashed head-on into a lorry and was killed.

In the early hours of Tuesday, police in the south Austrian city of Friesach were called to investigate a brutal homicide. A 27-year-old man broke into his former girlfriend's flat and attacked her with an axe.
Inside the apartment were the 30-year-old woman, her new 29-year-old partner, and two children. The intruder killed the man and seriously injured the woman. She fled to a neighbour, who alerted the emergency services.
Meanwhile, the perpetrator got into his car and drove head-on into an oncoming lorry on the S37 in the direction of Klagenfurt. He died at the scene of the accident. Police believe he intended to take his own life.
The woman was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries. The children remained unharmed in the attack.
