A man believed to be about 21 years old attacked and injured three officers at a police station in Vienna on Saturday evening, 20 July. The incident occurred after the suspect was taken into custody on suspicion of shoplifting.

A supermarket employee in the 15th district (Rudolfsheim-Fünfhaus) had previously regarded the man as suspicious and alerted the police. The officers who responded took the young man to Westbahnhof police station for identity verification.

His behaviour changed abruptly there. During the official procedure, the arrested man allegedly attacked the officers present without warning with punches and kicks, according to the authorities. The officers then overpowered him using physical force and placed handcuffs and leg shackles on him to prevent further attacks.

Three police officers sustained injuries during the incident and had to discontinue their duties. Investigations into the incident are ongoing.
