Austrian security authorities arrested six people on Tuesday in a nationwide raid on suspicion of belonging to the terrorist organisation Daesh. Enforcement officers searched a total of 14 locations across all nine federal states.

Those arrested include five men aged between 14 and 45 years and a 16-year-old girl. They are accused not only of membership in a terrorist organisation but also of spreading extremist propaganda, inciting terrorist acts and concealing terrorism-related activities.

During the searches, investigators secured extensive evidence material. This includes mobile phones, laptops, data carriers, documents and combat knives.

Omar Haijawi-Pirchner, head of the Directorate of State Security and Intelligence Service (DSN), described the coordinated operations as a significant milestone in the fight against extremism and terrorism. He stressed that the threat of radicalisation through online platforms is increasing rapidly and that continued vigilance and decisive action would therefore be required.

The operation was carried out jointly by the state criminal investigation offices and state security units across Austria and underscores the threat posed by Islamist radicalisation in the German-speaking region.
