A foundation festival of a fraternity in Leoben ended with far-right extremist slogans and a physical assault on a taxi driver. The Styrian state police have launched an investigation on suspicion of Nazi propaganda revival and assault.
The celebration took place over the past weekend in the Styrian city. AfD politician Matthias Helfrich was scheduled to speak at the event – a decision that drew criticism in advance.
During the festival, fraternity members are said to have repeatedly chanted the Hitler salute. In the following night, there was a further escalation. Several festival participants attacked a taxi driver who had previously brought guests to the event. The perpetrators kicked the man.
The driver sustained several injuries in the attack. In addition to abrasions and bruises, he suffered two bumps on the skull. His entire body bore the marks of contusions. The victim's partner described the impact of the attack the day after. She reported a sleepless night and criticised that right-wing extremists had dominated the weekend in the city.
