A lay court at Vienna's Regional Criminal Court acquitted the former FPÖ chairman and his co-defendant on Thursday of breach of trust allegations. The verdict is not yet final.
Strache and Herzog acquitted in breach of trust trial
On Thursday afternoon, a lay court at Vienna's Regional Criminal Court announced an acquittal for former FPÖ chairman and ex-Vice Chancellor Heinz-Christian Strache as well as Johann Herzog, the former finance officer of the FPÖ Vienna. Both had been tried on suspicion of breach of trust in connection with a life insurance policy financed by the party.
The prosecution had accused the two of unlawfully claiming the policy for private purposes. However, after five days of proceedings and a brief internal consultation, the judges decided that there was no criminal liability.
During the closing arguments, Strache had levelled sharp criticism at former associates. These individuals no longer wanted to remember earlier resolutions, according to the former politician before the tribunal. The first-instance verdict that has now been handed down can still be appealed.
