Fatal attack in Vienna park – unknown assailants fled on e-scooters
In the early hours of Sunday, a fatal violent crime occurred in a park in Vienna's 22nd district. A man who had not been definitively identified was so severely injured during a night-time assault that he succumbed to his injuries in hospital despite medical treatment.
The incident took place late Saturday evening in the area of Zieritzgasse. The man who later died was in the park together with a 33-year-old woman. Two persons on electric scooters approached the pair. A dispute erupted between the groups, which escalated into physical violence.
One of the unknown assailants allegedly struck the man in the face multiple times. The female companion was also attacked and forced to hand over cash. When police patrols arrived at the scene, the seriously injured man was lying motionless on the grass. Rescue workers attempted to resuscitate him, but transport to hospital could not prevent his death.
The 33-year-old stated that she did not know the exact identity of her companion. The Vienna State Criminal Police Office is heading the investigation. Police spokesman Philipp Haßlinger stated that comprehensive enquiries are being conducted in all directions, including forensic examination, post-mortem investigation and witness questioning.
In another current fatal case in the capital, there are no new findings. On Thursday evening, a 70-year-old resident was found in her apartment in Mariahilf with multiple stab wounds. The Vienna State Criminal Police Office investigation extends across state borders.
