The investigation into the death of a newborn in Burgenland has led to the arrest of another suspect. Five people are now in pre-trial detention.
The body of the small girl was discovered on 18 January 2026 by travellers. An autopsy showed that the newborn was born alive and died as a result of external violence. Forensic pathologists determined the cause of death to be a skull-brain injury.
Police had already identified four suspects in mid-February. Among them is the child's mother, who is only 17 years old. She was found together with two other Romanian women in Germany and extradited to Austria. A male suspect was arrested in Romania.
