In a 3,200 square-metre production facility in Vienna-Liesing, police units discovered an industrially operated cannabis cultivation on 9 September. Officers found more than 9,000 plants as well as large quantities of dried cannabis ready for distribution. In total, the seized drugs are estimated to amount to approximately one tonne.
Nine so-called "gardeners" were responsible for the extensive cultivation area, according to Vienna police. During the search, investigators also came across hundreds of thousands of euros in cash. The money was stored in neatly sorted bundles of 100-euro notes, packed in refrigerated plastic bags from a discount supermarket.
Vienna police released details of the case on Thursday at a press conference. Further information about possible masterminds or the origins of the accused was not initially disclosed.
