A case of alleged police violence from Austria's capital city is currently being heard before a court. A then 54-year-old man had been brought by security forces to the detention centre on Rossauer Lände. There, he spent several hours in a detention cell.
During his detention, the man is alleged to have repeatedly pointed out his physical complaints. According to the proceedings, he pressed the emergency alarm button in his cell. According to the allegations, neither the facility director nor the officer responsible for monitoring responded to these calls for help.
When the man was brought before a legal police officer later that evening, he was no longer able to stand independently. He had to be transported sitting in a wheelchair. Medical signs at that point already indicated a cerebrovascular emergency.
The prosecution alleges that the officers involved grossly neglected their duty of care. Through their failure to act, the detainee was placed in serious health danger. The proceedings are intended to clarify the exact circumstances of that night.
