The anti-corruption prosecutor has brought fresh charges against René Benko. The detained entrepreneur is now also accused of serious fraud and fraudulent bankruptcy.
WKStA brings fresh charges against detained Signa founder Benko
The Economic and Corruption Prosecutor's Office (WKStA) has brought further charges against René Benko. The 47-year-old founder of the Signa real-estate empire, who has been in pre-trial detention since January 2025, must now face court over serious fraud and fraudulent bankruptcy.
The investigating authorities submitted the indictment to the Innsbruck regional court. The WKStA announced this on Tuesday. The new proceedings are part of the extensive Signa complex, against which several criminal proceedings are already ongoing.
Benko has been in custody since the beginning of the year. With the latest charges, the allegations against the former real-estate entrepreneur are significantly expanded. Beyond the previously known suspicions of breach of trust, the prosecuting authority now also accuses him of obtaining third-party assets through fraudulent deception.
The submitted indictment is not yet final. The competent court must now examine whether the charges will be admitted to the main hearing.
