Austrian police arrested two Slovenian citizens aged 28 and 29 on the Styrian motorway A2 in the night of Friday. The men had fled from police in a stolen van and caused a traffic accident in the process.
According to N1, citing the Austrian news agency APA, the suspects had posed as buyers of the vehicle in Ljubljana on Thursday. Using a false identity and a forged transaction confirmation, they took the vehicle from a 58-year-old Slovenian seller and fled to Austria with it.
When the seller noticed the fraud, he informed Slovenian police. The latter forwarded the information to Austrian authorities, who were able to locate the stolen van on motorway A2 between Klagenfurt and Graz.
Austrian officers repeatedly ordered the 29-year-old driver to stop the vehicle, but the man did not respond to their instructions. Near Graz, he left the motorway and continued driving towards Ščavnica. The flight ended at around 22:00 when the vehicle crashed into a traffic sign.
Both suspects sustained minor injuries in the accident. Police arrested them and filed criminal charges against them. The damaged van was returned to its owner from Ljubljana after the investigation was concluded.
