Austrian police arrested two Slovenian nationals, aged 28 and 29, in Styria during the night of Friday. The men had fled from police in a stolen van and caused a traffic accident during their escape.
According to N1, citing the Austrian news agency APA, the suspects had posed as buyers of the vehicle in Ljubljana on Thursday. They had taken possession of the van from a 58-year-old seller, also a Slovenian national, using a false identity and a forged transaction confirmation, and subsequently fled to Austria with it.
When the seller discovered the fraud, he informed the Slovenian police. The police passed the information on to the Austrian security authorities, who located the stolen vehicle on the A2 motorway between Klagenfurt and Graz.
The Austrian officers requested the driver several times to stop the vehicle, but the 29-year-old did not respond to their instructions. Near Graz, he left the motorway and continued driving in the direction of Schwanberg. The pursuit ended at around 22:00, when the vehicle crashed into a traffic sign.
Both suspects sustained minor injuries in the accident. Police arrested them and filed criminal charges against them. The damaged vehicle was returned to its owner in Ljubljana following completion of the investigation.
