Austrian police arrested two Slovenian nationals aged 28 and 29 in the Styria region in the night leading to Friday. The two had fled from police in a stolen small van and caused a traffic accident during their flight.
According to broadcaster N1, citing Austrian news agency APA, the suspects had posed as buyers of the van in Ljubljana on Thursday. From a 58-year-old seller, also a Slovenian national, they obtained the vehicle using a false identity and a forged bank transfer confirmation, then fled in the direction of Austria.
When the seller discovered the fraud, he informed Slovenian police, according to N1. They passed the information on to Austrian security authorities, who located the stolen vehicle on the A2 motorway between Klagenfurt and Graz.
Austrian officers called upon the driver several times to stop the vehicle, but the 29-year-old did not respond to their stop signals. Near Graz, he exited the motorway and continued driving in the direction of Ščavnica. The flight ended around 22:00 when the vehicle collided with a traffic sign.
Both suspects sustained minor injuries in the accident. Police arrested them and filed criminal charges. The damaged van was returned to its owner in Ljubljana after the investigation was completed.
