Multiple Belgian retailers hit by cyberattack targeting their refrigeration units

The refrigerators and freezers of dozens of supermarkets in Belgium were targeted by a cyberattack in the night of Sunday to Monday, 2 November 2026, according to actu.fr citing AFP information.

Carrefour confirmed that approximately 15 of its 700 Belgian stores were affected. Mich Vergauwen, the group's spokesperson, specified that this attack was similar to one that occurred recently in France, causing a rise in temperatures in refrigeration facilities.

Dozens of Delhaize stores, around fifteen Intermarché locations and five sales points from the Belgian Colruyt group also reported similar incidents to AFP. These retailers, however, did not formally confirm that it was a cyberattack.

On the display of a refrigerator at a Delhaize store in Boortmeerbeek, approximately 30 km north-east of Brussels, a notice read on Monday morning: "Due to cyberattacks, there will be no products on refrigerated and frozen shelves."

Ikea in turn confirmed that its store in Mons, in southern Belgium, had been the target of a cyberattack. No other stores of the Swedish retailer in the country were affected, the group specified. At around 3am, the temperature of the freezers there increased suddenly.

The overall impact remained limited, according to spokespeople from Carrefour and Intermarché contacted by AFP. The opening of the affected stores was not compromised. Intermarché's spokesman in Belgium indicated that little merchandise had been discarded and that restocking had been able to be carried out in some sales points before opening time.

In Sweden, several supermarkets also recorded a spectacular rise in temperatures in their refrigeration facilities on Monday morning, forcing them to dispose of spoiled foodstuffs.

These incidents recall those that occurred in France on the night of 12 October. Hundreds of French supermarkets had then fallen victim to a cyberattack described as "unprecedented" targeting their refrigeration systems. At least 300 Intermarché/Netto sales outlets, fewer than a hundred from the Coopérative U network, several E.Leclerc stores, 80 Carrefour supermarkets and around thirty Monoprix locations had been affected during this previous wave.
