Bolivian Assembly convenes following arrest of Attorney General Mariaca on drug trafficking charges

Legislative body debates future of Attorney General's Office after Mariaca's detention

Bolivia's Plurinational Legislative Assembly convened on Friday at 10:25 for an ordinary session to analyse the situation of the State Attorney General's Office, after its head Roger Mariaca was arrested on charges of leading an alleged criminal organisation dedicated to protecting drug trafficking networks, according to El Deber.

Senator Diego Ávila presided over the session in his capacity as president of the Assembly, in the absence of Edmand Lara, who is in Spain.

The first item on the agenda covered "knowledge and consideration of official reports on the arrest of the Attorney General of the State, as well as the institutional, legal and constitutional background linked to the incident".

Minutes before the start of the legislative debate, presidential spokesperson José Luis Gálvez stated that narco-terrorism "has financed with bribes decisions of great significance" in Bolivia, including Mariaca's own appointment.

Gálvez further warned that "since yesterday the same rumours have resurfaced that they want to buy votes with drug trafficking money to continue maintaining the same scheme intact that was friendly to (Sebastián) Marset and protected the most dangerous cartels in the region".

The spokesperson described the day as "historic" and noted that Bolivians would witness "the birth of a new stage of Justice or otherwise we will see its subjugation again".
