A man has been apprehended after killing a 31-year-old taxi driver with blows and rocks in Santa Cruz. Police do not rule out further arrests.

A 31-year-old taxi driver identified as Carlos Andrés O.B. was found dead in the Santa Cruz Industrial Park area, according to confirmation from El Deber. Residents of the sector alerted police on Sunday, 4 October, after noticing a man lying on the ground, badly beaten, and a vehicle with shattered windows a few metres from the body.

The victim had been stoned and beaten to death. His taxi showed visible damage as a result of the attack.

The departmental police commander of Santa Cruz, Colonel Edson Fernández, confirmed the apprehension of a suspect and indicated that further arrests are expected in the coming hours. "There was an apprehension by civilians. This is a reprehensible violent act from every point of view. The case already has one person apprehended and over the course of the following hours certainly other arrests will be made," he stated.

Fernández indicated that the crime may have been triggered by excessive consumption of alcoholic beverages, ruling out for the time being the hypothesis of a settling of scores. Investigations continue to clarify the exact motives for the attack.
