Public security agents in the state of São Paulo thwarted an attempt on last Wednesday to transport nearly three hundred kilograms of narcotics by air. The cargo, composed of cocaine base paste, originated in the border region between Brazil and Paraguay.
The aircraft departed from Ponta Porã, a Brazilian municipality bordering the Paraguayan town of Pedro Juan Caballero, and was heading towards the São Paulo capital. During the route, authorities noticed suspicious movement at low altitude and initiated surveillance with a police aircraft.
The pursuit lasted approximately forty minutes. The pilot managed to land on a rural property located in Florínea, approximately four hundred and eighty kilometres from the metropolis, but abandoned the aircraft and attempted to evade by running through the surrounding area. Police officers, however, caught and arrested the suspect.
At a press conference, officer Samuel Sobrinho explained that airspace monitoring was intensified because criminal organisations have been migrating to this route, assessing that it presents fewer risks of ground interdiction.
