Operation Answer Sheet: Federal Police investigates fraud in UFRJ public exam for 243 positions

Federal Police executes 13 warrants in west Rio over suspected fraud in UFRJ public examination

The Federal Police launched Operation Answer Sheet on the morning of Wednesday (21) to investigate suspicions of fraud in the public examination for administrative technician in education at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ), as reported by agenciabrasil.ebc.com.br. The examinations, held in early March to fill 243 positions, were alleged to have shown an irregular pattern of answers amongst different candidates.

Police officers executed 13 search and seizure warrants issued by the 2nd Federal Criminal Court of Rio in the neighbourhoods of Realengo, Bangu and Taquara. During the operations, 13 mobile phones, two notebooks and various documents were seized.

The investigation began after the examination organising company itself sent a report to the Federal Police pointing to suspicious similarities between answer sheets of different candidates. According to the Federal Police, the pattern may indicate an organised scheme to benefit certain participants. Those investigated could face charges for fraud in a public examination, as well as other crimes that may be identified.

In a statement, the UFRJ informed that, upon becoming aware of the suspicions, it "established an inquiry commission and sent a report to the Federal Police". The university added that "the candidates involved in the fraud suspicions were eliminated from the examination, which proceeded regularly, with the results being certified and the appointment of new staff members".

The institution further clarified that "none of the 13 search and seizure warrants released by the Federal Police were directed at UFRJ staff members or facilities" and reaffirmed "its commitment to transparency and integrity in public examinations".
