The Federal Police and customs of Brazil carried out on Sunday the seizure of approximately 50 tonnes of drugs impregnated in wood originating from Bolivia. The operation involved the collaboration of authorities from both countries and the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) of the United States.
Bolivia's presidential spokesman, José Luis Gálvez, stated at a press conference on Monday that the action results from coordinated work between the Bolivian Police, the DEA, and the customs authorities of Bolivia and Brazil. According to him, samples of the material were collected and are being analysed in laboratories of the three countries, in accordance with binational protocol.
Gálvez emphasised the Bolivian government's efforts in combating drug trafficking. In the past seven months, authorities managed to arrest seven leaders of criminal organisations, including members of the Red Command, the First Capital Command (PCC) and Uruguayan trafficker Sebastián Marset. The spokesman mentioned that one of those detained was serving a 126-year sentence and was living freely in the country, a situation that would have been tolerated by previous administrations.
This is the second major seizure of drugs transported in Bolivian wood in recent weeks. A few weeks ago, Chilean authorities found more than 100 tonnes of drugs using the same trafficking method. Bolivia's Police and Public Prosecutor's Office are investigating both cases.
