The spokesman for the Civil Police of Minas Gerais, delegate Saulo Castro, stated on Tuesday, 21, that Captain Michele Leão Azevedo presented a "very serious injury" to her face upon arriving dead at Hospital Odilon Behrens in Belo Horizonte on the evening of Monday, 20. At a press conference at the State Department for Investigation of Homicides and Protection of Persons (DHPP), Castro detailed the severity of injuries found by police.
"There are multiple injuries on the victim's body. There is an apparent very serious injury to the victim's face. This was found in such a way that the severity of that injury is very clear," the delegate stated.
Sergeant Eduardo Abner Pereira de Oliveira, Michele's husband, was arrested in flagrante delicto on suspicion of femicide. The Civil Police reported that Michele was already dead between four and six hours before being taken to the health facility.
Castro added that the couple's relationship was marked by conflicts and a history of domestic violence.
"There is also a description of acts of psychological and moral violence by the perpetrator against the victim, bringing this context of domestic and family violence," the delegate stated.
Lawyer Gustavo Nepomuceno, who represents sergeant Eduardo Abner, called for caution given the ongoing investigations.
"At this moment, it is essential that we await the conclusion of the investigations and expert reports, avoiding any hasty judgment. The case is still in the initial phase of investigation, and all circumstances will be properly clarified by the competent authorities," Nepomuceno stated in a note.
