Confrontation with BOPE in São José de Ribamar leaves one dead and another arrested with two firearms
A suspect died and another was arrested during operations by BOPE in the municipality of São José de Ribamar, in Greater São Luís, with the seizure of three firearms.

A suspect died following an armed confrontation with teams from the Special Operations Battalion (BOPE) of the Military Police of Maranhão on the morning of Tuesday (1st), in São José de Ribamar, in the Metropolitan Region of São Luís. According to g1.globo.com, the incidents are divided into two distinct operations carried out between Monday and Tuesday.
On the evening of Monday (31st), BOPE teams were dispatched to Porto do Cajueiro, in the Olho D'Água neighbourhood, following information that armed individuals were planning an attack against members of a rival criminal faction with influence in the football pitch in the Balanço Grande neighbourhood, in the same municipality.
During the search, intelligence agents identified suspects in a difficult-to-access mangrove area. Some of the individuals fled as police approached. A 27-year-old man, identified by the nickname "Zói de Gato", was located and approached at approximately 17:00. With him, police officers found a Taurus pistol model 24/7, calibre .40, with magazine and 13 intact rounds.
The suspect also indicated to police officers the hiding place of a calibre 12 shotgun with the serial number erased, accompanied by three rounds. He was arrested in flagrante and taken to the Civil Police Station in Maiobão with all seized material. The case was registered as unlawful carrying of a firearm for restricted use.
Meanwhile, the other BOPE teams remained in the mangrove area, maintaining the cordon and conducting searches for the other fugitives.
The following morning, during the continuation of operations, one of the suspects believed to be part of the criminal group was located. According to the police force, there was an armed confrontation with officers. The man was hit, rescued, but did not survive his injuries and died. A .30 calibre firearm, reportedly used in the exchange of fire, was seized from him.
The Military Police reported that the two incidents are linked to operations combating the activities of criminal groups in the region.
