Confrontation at São Paulo prison results in two deaths and several injured
A disturbance at Penitenciária I de Potim, in the interior of São Paulo, ended with two inmates killed and four others injured last Saturday (20). The prison unit remained on high alert throughout the night.
The Secretaria de Administração Penitenciária (SAP) clarified that the problem began when one detainee took another cellmate hostage. While teams from the Gate and prison police officers negotiated to free the hostage, a brawl broke out among the inmates themselves, causing the two deaths.
The crisis ended around six o'clock on Sunday morning (21), when the two individuals responsible for the hostage-taking surrendered. Visitors who were in the sector were escorted out without incident.
The secretaria reported that those responsible for the disturbance were transferred to other prisons and will face charges in court. An internal inquiry was opened to clarify what actually occurred.
On Sunday, the GIR — Grupo de Intervenção Rápida — conducted a complete sweep of the penitentiary, with reinforcement from the military police outside. Visits were temporarily suspended.
The Potim prison was designed to hold 748 inmates, but currently houses 1,302. The semi-open sector, with capacity for 96 people, currently holds 129.
