Gunfire in school carpark sparks police operation in south São Paulo
An armed confrontation in the carpark of a large educational complex prompted a massive police response on Monday afternoon (22) on Itapecerica da Serra road, in the southern region of the São Paulo capital. The shooting involved a man who apparently attempted to rob an undercover police officer who had come to the location to pick up his daughter.
The incident occurred at the exact moment of shift change: secondary school students were leaving the building while university students were arriving. The plainclothes officer reacted to the criminal act, initiating an intense exchange of gunfire.
One person was injured in the shooting and was transported to Hospital Central Sul. The location, which houses secondary and higher education courses, was quickly cordoned off by police to preserve the scene.
At the sound of the gunshots, several law enforcement units were dispatched to set up a perimeter around the institution. The intention was to capture the shooter or any possible accomplices who might still be lurking in the surrounding area. Ambulances from the Mobile Emergency Care Service also travelled to the address to assist those injured.
Those who witnessed the scene described widespread panic as soon as the first shots rang out across the carpark. Investigation work is ongoing, as the competent authorities attempt to confirm whether there are more injured beyond the one case already documented.
