Conviction for forced abortion in Vale do Jequitinhonha

The Jury Court of the District of Jacinto, in Vale do Jequitinhonha, convicted a man to ten years in prison under a closed regime for the crime of abortion induced by a third party without the pregnant woman's consent, as reported by cnnbrasil.com.br.

The complaint filed by the Public Ministry of Minas Gerais (MPMG) indicated refusal to assume paternity as the motive for the crime. According to the MPMG, the accused lured his ex-partner with the promise of taking her to a prenatal consultation and forced her to ingest abortion medication in a hotel.

Faced with the victim's initial resistance, the man broke into her residence the following day and forced her again to take the pills. The Jury Panel recognised both the authorship and the materiality of the crime.

The sentence was set at the maximum level provided for by article 125 of the Penal Code, without the possibility of substitution by restrictive penalties, due to the severe physical and neurological damage caused to the victim.

The case is being handled under court secrecy.
