Suspect in Rio Pequeno homicide arrested with firearm with obliterated serial number

The Military Police of the State of São Paulo arrested, on Friday evening (23rd), a 40-year-old man being investigated for possible involvement in the homicide of Jean Victor Sousa Guimarães, 22 years old. According to agenciasp.sp.gov.br, Jean's body had been found on Thursday (22nd) on a plot of land on Rua Paulo da Silva, in Rio Pequeno, west zone of São Paulo's capital, with bound hands and marks of violence.

The operation was conducted by police officers from the 16th Metropolitan Police Battalion (16º BPM/M), who arrived at the address in Jardim Catanduva following investigations based on intelligence information and reports received by the Anonymous Tip Line. The reports indicated a possible link between the suspect and a criminal organisation.

"During the search, the team found, in the roof cavity of the residence, a .38 calibre revolver with obliterated serial number and five intact rounds. A mobile telephone was also seized. The suspect is a former prisoner and has previous convictions for robbery and drug trafficking," stated Lieutenant-Colonel Ives Minosso, commander of the 16º BPM/M.

The detainee was taken to the Homicide and Personal Protection Department (DHPP) of the Civil Police, in the República district. In the early hours of Saturday (24th), the department formalised the arrest in flagrante delicto for illegal possession of a firearm with obliterated serial number and requested the Courts to convert the arrest into a preventive detention order.

Images from security cameras recorded four people removing a body from a vehicle and leaving it on the plot of land. The initial hypothesis is that Jean was murdered elsewhere. According to the investigations, the detainee was among the men who abandoned the body.

"The DHPP is continuing with investigations to clarify the participation of each person involved, identify the remaining suspects and establish the motive for the crime. Physical evidence was collected and forensic examinations were requested," explained the department's director, Ivalda Aleixo.

The case is part of a series of homicides with bodies found in the capital being investigated by the DHPP. On Friday (23rd), the Public Security Secretariat reported that the Civil Police had identified eight adults and two adolescents involved in four other homicides, with arrest and apprehension warrants sent to the Courts.

The state's Public Security Secretary, Osvaldo Nico Gonçalves, ruled out any connection between the different cases. "At this moment, there are no elements indicating a connection between the different cases or a single perpetrator. The occurrences present distinct dynamics and circumstances and are being investigated individually. The use of plastic bags or fabrics, in isolation, does not allow establishing a relationship between the crimes," he stated.
