A 65-year-old man was arrested in the early hours of 13 June at a residence in Peruíbe, on the coast of São Paulo, after more than a month evading capture. He is accused of killing a 42-year-old woman during an argument over water supply.
The crime occurred on 27 April, near Avenida Vereador Lydio Martins Corrêa, in Guarujá. According to the police report, the suspect had interrupted the flow of a hose supplying water to the victim's house, directing the water to another property instead. This sparked a dispute between him and the woman's husband.
The victim left the scene, but returned shortly afterwards to hand the hose to her husband, who intended to resolve the standoff. An acquaintance of the woman reported hearing the victim pleading for violence not to occur. Three gunshots were heard moments later. The witness found the woman lying on the ground.
The Mobile Emergency Response Service was called and transported the victim to Santo Amaro Hospital, but she did not survive.
After the incident, the suspect fled on a motorcycle. During the period he was evading capture, he began using his brother's identity to conceal himself. The arrest took place in the Jardim dos Prados neighbourhood in Peruíbe, when Civil Police officers received a tip-off that he intended to leave the state. Officers executed a temporary arrest warrant.
During interrogation, the man admitted to firing the shots but claimed his intention was to hit the victim's husband, not her.
