A Brazilian Civil Police officer who headed the Division of Investigations on Narcotics in the city of Campinas was apprehended on Tuesday by members of the institution itself. The city is located approximately 90 kilometres from the São Paulo metropolis. The detainee is accused of belonging to Primeiro Comando da Capital, the criminal group whose activities he was meant, in principle, to suppress.

The police operation, named "Infiltrated", also led to the capture of a former member of that security force, an employee of the Penal Police and a former intern at the Public Ministry who now works in law. All are suspected of links to the largest organised crime faction in the South American country.

According to the authorities, the head of the narcotics investigators was acting as a PCC mole within the corporation. Among the illicit activities attributed to him are the advance disclosure of information about operations aimed at dismantling the criminal group, money laundering from the illicit drug trade and involvement in a conspiracy to eliminate a Public Ministry judge known for his tough stance against organised crime in the Campinas area.

During the operation, 10 court orders for search and seizure were executed.

The head of investigations and the lawyer allegedly also maintained an independent extortion scheme targeting drug traffickers. Using access credentials to digital platforms that the lawyer held from his time working with the public prosecutors' office, the pair would identify individuals under scrutiny by prosecutors and demand substantial sums from them to remove them from investigations and sanctions.

Campinas is among the most populous and economically developed cities in São Paulo state, and is also a territory where the criminal faction exercises significant influence.
