A 22-year-old man was stabbed in the chest on Friday night (5) during a fair held in the central square of Rifaina (SP), according to reporting by g1.globo.com. The suspect, aged 28, was arrested at the scene by the Municipal Civil Guard (GCM) whilst still at the event.
The victim was initially treated at the municipal Basic Health Unit (UBS) and subsequently transferred to the Santa Casa in Pedregulho due to the severity of the wound. His state of health was not disclosed by the authorities.
The detainee was charged with attempted murder and remained in custody. The Civil Police requested that the judge convert the flagrant arrest into a preventive detention order to keep him detained during the course of the investigation.
How the approach took place
Municipal guards were conducting preventive policing at the fair when they were approached by friends of the injured young man. They reported that a man was circulating through the event carrying a penknife.
Moments later, the officers spotted the victim walking towards the team with a chest wound and visible bleeding. The same people who had alerted them to the armed man identified the suspect as the perpetrator of the assault, according to the incident report.
Based on this information, the guards approached and detained the man at the scene. During the action, a penknife was seized which, according to the investigation, had been used in the crime.
The GCM reported that there was a large crowd in the square and that the victim's friends began threatening the suspect after the attack. To prevent a riot and further assaults, the man was removed from the event before being taken to the police authority.
The suspect's version
In a statement to the guards, the man claimed he was at the fair and approached a group of young women. According to his account, the victim arrived at the location, pushed him and told him to leave.
The suspect also stated that he believed the young man was armed with a penknife and, because of this, struck him in the chest area. The victim's statement had not yet been taken at the time the report was filed, as he required emergency medical treatment.
Classification as attempted murder
The officer in charge of the duty shift noted in the incident report that the stab wound struck a vital region of the body, and this fact was cited as one of the elements that formed the basis for charging the case as attempted murder.
The request for preventive detention will be analysed by the court. The Civil Police continue to investigate the case.
