Officers from the Itaqui Police Station, located on the Western Border of Rio Grande do Sul, carried out an operation on Tuesday (16 June) to suppress illegal substance trafficking in the region. The action resulted in the detention of four members of a gang and the execution of four court search warrants.
In the course of the investigation, police officers seized vehicles, mobile phones, narcotics and anabolic steroids. The inquiry originated from an arrest made in flagrante delicto on 18 May of this year, during a broader operation to combat organised crime on the border between Brazil and Uruguay. On that occasion, a suspect was captured whilst transporting drugs.
The investigators discovered that the organisation operated a telephone delivery service that functioned 24 hours a day. Furthermore, they identified that part of the deliveries were made in the vicinity of schools and colleges in the city.
With the evidence gathered, the responsible delegate requested the arrests and searches, which were endorsed by the Public Ministry and authorised by the courts.
Rodrigo Bobrzyk, head of the local police station, stated that goods confiscated from criminal organisations — whether because they were purchased with illicit funds or because they serve to commit crimes — can be allocated to public security institutions. According to him, this helps to weaken the gangs financially and at the same time reinforces the operational capacity of the police.
The operation received reinforcement from officers assigned to the border operation and resulted in a loss calculated at approximately one hundred thousand reais to the criminals.
