The Federal Police launched the largest cocaine seizure in the country's history when they intercepted a cargo of 260 tonnes of timber impregnated with the drug in liquid form. The lorries were intercepted in the municipalities of Corumbá in Mato Grosso do Sul and Cáceres in Mato Grosso, following an anonymous tip-off. Sniffer dogs assisted in locating the material.
The cargo originated in Bolivia. The criminals employed a technique of dissolving cocaine in water to impregnate the timber, making detection difficult. The drug, which was to be sent to Europe, could reach up to 50 tonnes once processed.
The operation had the support of the Federal Revenue Service, the Army and international cooperation from the United States and Bolivia. The case highlights both the sophistication of the methods used by drug traffickers and the challenges faced by Brazilian authorities in combating trafficking across the borders. Equipment such as port scanners has been deployed to strengthen inspections.
