Young man detained for murder of retired police officer during robbery in SP
A 23-year-old youth was captured on Thursday (18) suspected of killing a retired military police officer during a robbery in the eastern zone of the São Paulo capital. The incident occurred the previous evening in the Parque Jacuí neighbourhood.
According to CNN Brasil, the victim and a friend were riding bicycles when they were surprised by two robbers. The former officer attempted to defend himself and engaged in a physical struggle with the attackers. During the confrontation, the detainee attempted to take the police officer's weapon, but ended up firing shots with the officer's own revolver.
The officer was taken to hospital, but did not survive his injuries. While fleeing, the criminals stole the weapon, a mobile phone and the two bicycles — considered luxury items. The objects were later found in the suspects' homes.
The detainee told police that he threw the revolver into the river near the crime scene. The search for the second person involved, Erisvaldo Ribeiro Santos, continues. The two are brothers.
The case is being investigated by the 63rd Police District. Policing in the region has been reinforced to assist with the search and prevent further property crimes.
Both suspects have criminal records. The detainee had previously been charged with bicycle theft. The fugitive, who was released from the prison system in February this year, has convictions for three robberies, drug trafficking and theft.
