Police sergeant Carlos Fernando Dias Chaves is being tried on Tuesday (25th) at the 4th Jury Court in the capital of Rio de Janeiro, almost 11 years after the death of two young men in the Pavuna neighbourhood, north zone of the city, according to reporting from cnnbrasil.com.br.
The officer faces trial for the deaths of Tiago Guimarães Dingo, aged 24, and Jorge Lucas Paes, aged 17. The two were travelling on a motorcycle when they were shot during a patrol by the 41st BPM (Irajá) in October 2015. Both were struck in the back and died on the scene.
In a statement given at the time, Chaves said he had confused a hydraulic jack that Jorge was carrying on the back of the motorcycle with a gun. After the shots were fired, the sergeant voluntarily presented himself at the Homicide Division.
The Civil Police conducted the investigation and carried out a simulated reconstruction in December 2015 to recreate the dynamics of what occurred. During the reconstruction, there were shots fired in the region, and the Shock Battalion was called in to reinforce security. The case also prompted demonstrations by residents during Tiago's funeral.
The Public Defender's Office of Rio de Janeiro acts as assistant prosecutor and represents Tiago's family in the proceedings.
