The ministers of the First Panel of the Supreme Federal Court unanimously decided to punish former parliamentarian Eduardo Bolsonaro for the crime of coercion in the course of legal proceedings. The judgment session took place on Tuesday (16). The indictment argues that he acted with authorities in the United States in order for them to adopt sanctions against representatives and bodies of Brazil, seeking to obstruct the criminal procedure that investigated the responsibility of former executive chief Jair Bolsonaro in an alleged institutional rupture attempt. The US leader stated that he had been informed that "they arrested Bolsonaro Jr." or that there is intention to detain him due to statements made in Texas. In practice, what occurred was a judicial conviction, not a preventive detention order.
The parliamentarian Flávio Bolsonaro, from the PL party in Rio de Janeiro, appears, according to voting intention surveys, as the greatest competitor of the current occupant of the Planalto, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, from the PT, in any eventual electoral dispute. In the same interview, Trump described Brazil as "politically dangerous" and assessed that the national situation is "somewhat difficult".
The punishment of Eduardo Bolsonaro coincides with a phase of renewed tensions between Brasília and Washington. In early June, the US administration formalised the inclusion of the factions First Command of the Capital and Red Command on the list of terrorist groups. In parallel, the Trump government is analysing the application of a 25 per cent surcharge on a portion of goods imported from Brazil, justifying the measure with alleged trade distortions in sectors such as digital platforms, electronic payment methods, ethanol market and illegal suppression of vegetation.
The classification of the PCC and the CV as terrorist organisations by the State Department constitutes a severe blow to the Palácio do Planalto in diplomatic relations with the North Americans.
