The Superior Court of Justice decided to transfer Operation Poço de Lobato to Federal Justice, which is investigating alleged tax irregularities involving Refit, a company in the oil refining sector. The ruling came from Minister Messod Azulay Neto.
The change in jurisdiction was motivated by suspicion of irregular financial operations conducted outside national territory. With federalisation, the authorities gain greater capacity to investigate possible funds moved abroad.
Refit is the subject of investigation for possible tax crimes. The operation, which previously proceeded at state level, will now be conducted by federal authorities, which allows for the use of broader instruments of international cooperation in asset tracing.
