Suspected water poisoning in Guarani Kaiowá territory following elections

Allegation of water poisoning threatens Guarani Kaiowá community in Mato Grosso do Sul

Federal Deputy Célia Xakriabá (PSOL) requested on Tuesday (27th) investigations into alleged water poisoning in the territory of the Guarani Kaiowá in Mato Grosso do Sul, which occurred following the results of the presidential elections. According to agenciabrasil.ebc.com.br, local leaders reported being victims of the crime.

In an audio message circulated via WhatsApp, one of those involved allegedly stated that it was necessary to "kill these pests [sic] through the water". The allegation was corroborated by the Articulation of Indigenous Peoples of Brazil (Apib).

Xakriabá emphasised that the Guarani Kaiowá already face severe drinking water shortages, depending on water trucks for supply. The contamination of this resource, according to her, would place the entire population of the community at direct risk.

The allegation was forwarded to the Ministry of Justice and Public Security (MJSP), the Ministry of Indigenous Peoples (MPI), the Federal Public Ministry (MPF) and the Superior Electoral Court (TSE), due to the case's connection to the electoral results.

In a joint statement, the ministries of Indigenous Peoples (MPI), Human Rights and Citizenship (MDHC) and Racial Equality (MIR) requested investigations and reported that they are also acting on reports of violence against quilombola communities and terreiro peoples registered following the second round.
