38 arrests in Kleinbasel: cantonal police draw up assessment of spring enforcement action
Basel-Stadt cantonal police made 38 arrests between April and May and conducted 171 person checks. Three-quarters of the arrests were for breach of an exclusion order.
38 arrests in lower Kleinbasel: police register high level of enforcement
From 21 April to 21 May, Basel-Stadt cantonal police conducted a focused enforcement operation in lower Kleinbasel targeting violent offences, property offences and drug-related crimes. According to primenews.ch, citing a statement from the Justice and Security Department (JSD) Basel-Stadt, 38 persons were arrested and 171 person checks were carried out during this period.
Among those arrested were 15 Algerian nationals, 4 Moroccan nationals and 3 Turkish nationals, as well as 16 further nationalities. In approximately three-quarters of the cases, breach of a cantonal exclusion order was the reason for arrest.
What does exclusion mean? Persons without valid residence permits who disturb public safety and order and for whom immediate removal is not possible are excluded from the canton by the Basel-Stadt migration authority — they are no longer permitted to enter the canton's territory. In case of a breach, the migration authority orders the arrest, transfers the affected persons to the responsible canton and files a report.
Two example cases from the press statement illustrate the practice: A man in his early thirties, who had previously come to the attention of police due to violent and property offences as well as breaches of the narcotics law, was arrested during a check due to an existing exclusion order. In a second case, it was a man in his mid-twenties who had previously been noticed in connection with breaches of the pharmaceuticals law and in relation to bicycle thefts — he too was arrested for disregarding an exclusion order.
Basel-Stadt cantonal police draw a positive assessment. The "high level of enforcement" at the beginning of the warmer season had substantially contributed to curbing a marked increase in the affected types of offences and their associated phenomena, according to the statement.
