According to Le Temps, structural deficiencies in French childcare operations are shaking the country: investigations are underway in 84 preschools, around twenty primary schools and approximately ten nurseries into alleged violence against children. 78 care workers have been suspended, of whom 31 are under suspicion of sexual abuse. On Tuesday, a first trial begins – which according to Le Temps will be followed by further proceedings.
Images of desperate parents, wavering between fear and anger, characterise the public debate. According to the newspaper, the scandal has not only brought individual perpetrators to light, but has revealed systemic gaps that enabled abuse of children and, in Le Temps's assessment, even created a kind of pull effect for potential offenders.
Citizens' assembly and marches as a response
As a consequence, Paris Mayor Emmanuel Grégoire has established a citizens' assembly on childcare operations – with the stated aim of "redesigning everything from the ground up". Alongside this, marches for youth are planned across France this weekend.
The case is increasingly being perceived as a national problem. The investigations are not limited to Paris alone, but point to broader oversight failures in the out-of-school care system. The citizens' assembly is to develop concrete reform proposals; its findings are still pending.
