A 70-year-old woman fired a shot from a pistol in front of three children in Aesch BL. The criminal court sentenced her to a suspended prison sentence.

Nearly three years ago, an elderly woman in Aesch BL frightened several children with a handgun. The criminal court of the canton has now sentenced the 70-year-old to a suspended prison sentence.
The incident occurred on 1 August 2023. The defendant pointed a pistol at three boys aged seven, ten and eleven and fired. She later claimed she had only shot into the air. The judges did not believe her.
The three boys described the course of events uniformly differently. According to their account, the woman aimed at head height. The chamber found their accounts convincing. During questioning, the defendant herself had not put forward the version of firing into the air.
At the time of the incident, the pensioner was under the influence of drugs. She fired from close range – only one to two metres away – at the children. The presiding judge emphasised during the pronouncement of sentence that even a minimal deviation could have resulted in death.
During the course of proceedings, the convicted woman showed remorse. She apologised to the victims and expressed shame over her actions.
