Vaud woman banned from Coop 24 times – sentenced to six months imprisonment
A woman from Vaud canton ignored her Coop ban more than 20 times and also stole from other shops. The court sentenced her to six months imprisonment.
Ignoring ban: Vaud woman sentenced after dozens of thefts
What began with a stolen Mate drink for 1.90 francs ended in an unconditional custodial sentence. According to 20 Minuten, citing 24 heures, a woman from Vaud canton violated her two-year Coop ban more than twenty times and committed further thefts in other shops.
The first incident occurred in December of the previous year. Coop filed a complaint and imposed a two-year ban. Just ten days later, the woman returned to the same branch and stole a perfume.
In the following months, she entered the Coop branch repeatedly: four times in January, twice in February, twelve times in March and six times in April. She is said to have stolen several perfumes and jewellery among other items. Coop filed a complaint in each instance.
She also committed offences outside the supermarket. In Lausanne, she stole a mobile phone from a launderette and a handbag from a shop. At Manor, she was caught with three stolen perfumes – despite a ban also being in place against her there.
The woman was additionally found preparing a dose of cocaine and consuming crack.
The court convicted her by order of punishment for theft, trespass and violations of the narcotics law to six months imprisonment without probation. This is accompanied by a fine of 1,200 francs and legal costs of 1,125 francs.
Coop told 24 heures that bans are imposed "very rarely" and only as a last resort. The company declines to disclose how many such bans are imposed annually and how compliance is monitored, citing security reasons.
