Riots in Zurich: cantonal police arrest two armed men

As sarganserlaender.ch reports, Zurich cantonal police arrested two young men during the night into Sunday who were carrying weapons and disguise materials during the riots. The weapons seized consisted of spiked gloves – objects that, according to a police spokesperson speaking to news agency Keystone-SDA, are classified as weapons because they amplify the force of blows.

The two detainees are Swiss nationals aged 19 and 21. Cantonal police caught them on a construction site where they allegedly were collecting projectiles to use against emergency personnel. The cantonal police also issued 18 removal orders.

The events were triggered by an unauthorised rally on Saturday evening, in which several hundred people wearing Halloween masks participated. Street barricades and a car were set on fire. Emergency personnel were attacked with pyrotechnics, bottles and stones. They in turn deployed water cannons, tear gas and rubber bullets against the rioters.

Cantonal police supported Zurich city police during the night. There were also riots in Basel and Bern on Saturday evening.
