A foreign national has been taken into custody after being identified as the likely perpetrator of the homicide of a Chilean citizen found dead on a central street in the capital, reports BioBioChile.

The body was found in the early morning hours at the intersection of Avenida Santa Rosa and Calle Pedro Lagos, in the heart of Santiago. The deceased presented cutting wounds consistent with the use of a sharp instrument. A municipal employee working in a surveillance booth in the area was the one who discovered the body and alerted authorities.

The arrest took place in a residence located directly opposite the location where the incident occurred. Prosecutor Patricio Macaya confirmed that detectives from the Homicide Brigade gathered evidence that supported an application for a search warrant before the courts. Once the authorisation was granted, officers carried out the procedure in the morning and managed to apprehend the alleged perpetrator.

The Public Ministry representative specified that during the operation, clothing allegedly related to the offence was seized, as well as the instrument that would have been used to cause death. Regarding the motives, the prosecutor indicated that there would be evidence of a previous altercation between both parties.

For his part, subprefect Juan Zúñiga, in charge of the Homicide Brigade Centre North division, explained that his team took over the crime scene at the request of the Centre North Public Ministry, collecting evidence that allowed them to track down the suspect's hideout. Zúñiga clarified that they have visual records linking the detainee to the incident, although the seized objects will have to undergo laboratory analysis, a process that requires time.

The full identity of the arrested individual, of foreign nationality, remains unconfirmed. The investigation continues in the hands of the Public Ministry and the Police of Investigations.
