The incident occurred at the end of a ceremony commemorating the Sacred Heart, the 30 years of priesthood of Father Ricardo Rebolledo and a mass for deceased persons, as detailed by parish priest Christian Giadech.
The victim managed to take refuge in the temple after closing a metal door that prevented the attackers from entering. "At the moment that this door gives way, we would be mourning a murder inside the church," Giadech said.
The priest reflected on the attack, recalling that "in the old days the church was a place of refuge, even in times of war enemy soldiers did not enter the church". He described the entry of armed individuals into the premises as an "unprecedented" incident that compels reflection on the deterioration of coexistence and security.
The perpetrators of the attack have not yet been identified by authorities, who continue working to locate them.
