A Chilean court has imposed a 10-year prison sentence on a Bolivian citizen after being found transporting close to three tonnes of drugs in a vehicle, reported El Deber.

According to a report from the Tarapacá Regional Public Prosecutor's Office, the man was found guilty of the offence of illicit trafficking in narcotics and psychotropic substances. The trial took place last week and the court issued a guilty verdict, according to a statement by the chief prosecutor of Alto Hospicio, Guillermo Arriaza.

Agents from the Police of Investigations (PDI) detained the Bolivian man on Route 5 North, in the municipality of Taltal, when he was driving with the vehicle's lights turned off. The investigation determined that he was seeking to avoid customs controls, but was intercepted and his vehicle subjected to a search.

In the cargo compartment, agents found 96 packages containing 6 kilograms and 353 grams of cocaine hydrochloride, 26 kilograms and 760 grams of base cocaine and 2,837 kilograms and 961 grams of cannabis. The total value of the cargo was estimated at more than 14,000 million Chilean pesos, equivalent to more than 15 million dollars.

The confiscated drugs and the detainee's mobile telephone were incorporated as evidence in the case. The investigation established that on the device there were conversations linking him to the supplier of the cargo.
