A Bolivian citizen in irregular migration status was arrested in Chile following a police pursuit for the theft of three vehicles that were intended to cross into Bolivia.

In the Antofagasta Region, in the north of Chile, officers from the Ollagüe police station managed to apprehend a Bolivian male during an operation on the border. The action made it possible to recover part of a fleet of vehicles that had been illegally taken.
Everything began when the disappearance of three pick-up trucks was reported from Coyo, a locality belonging to San Pedro de Atacama. Using the geolocation device installed in one of the vehicles, agents tracked the movement of the thieves and organised an interception operation.
After travelling through high mountain zones at more than four thousand metres above sea level, officers spotted the convoy of stolen vehicles advancing towards the border with Bolivia. From that moment on, a surveillance pursuit was deployed that lasted for more than sixty minutes.
The suspects, upon noticing the police cordon, chose to scatter. One of the drivers crashed his vehicle into a police vehicle, subsequently abandoned the vehicle and attempted to flee on foot, but the agents subdued him and took him into custody.
The arrested person turned out to be an adult individual born in Bolivia who lacked valid documentation to remain in Chilean territory.
In parallel, officers tracked marks left by the tyres of the other pick-up trucks, which led to the bed of a dry river. There the second vehicle reported as stolen was found.
Chilean authorities have not yet concluded the investigation, as work continues to locate the third missing vehicle and the accomplices who managed to evade the operation.
