The Western Metropolitan Public Prosecutor's Office confirmed the detention of the alleged perpetrator of the homicide of Benjamín Galdámez, a 20-year-old young man who has been missing since Tuesday 20 October in the municipality of Maipú, according to reports from lacuarta.com.
As part of the investigation, authorities arrested a man who confessed to shooting Galdámez. Search operations are currently concentrated in the Zanjón de la Aguada sector and the Mapocho River.
Prosecutor Yasne Pastén, from the Western Metropolitan Public Prosecutor's Office, explained that the investigation was initiated following a report of a presumed accident. Pastén took a statement from the detainee, who is believed to have been the last person to be with the victim. "He has confessed to a homicide offence. For that reason a detention order has been requested," the prosecutor stated.
Regarding the testimony of the accused, the prosecutor indicated that the individual "confesses that he would have shot the victim (...) and there he falls into the canal". Pastén emphasised that this version is "subject to investigation" and that it is not advisable to discuss the motives of the incident whilst more precise evidence is not available.
Regarding the link between the detainee and Galdámez, the prosecutor indicated that "they have known each other for a long time and had a relationship of friendship". The accused mentioned a problem that occurred that day, but this information has not been corroborated by the investigation.
So far the murder weapon has not been found. Sub-prefect Tatiana García Huidobro, from the Missing Persons Search Brigade of the PDI, reported that "various investigative procedures" are being carried out, including a search and wading operation in the San Juan de la Aguada sector.
