Search for Benjamín Galdámez resumes following murder confession in Maipú

According to biobiochile.cl, this Monday search efforts resumed for Benjamín Galdámez, a 19-year-old youth who went missing in Maipú and is presumed dead. A former schoolmate, 20 years old, confessed to the PDI on Friday to have killed him and indicated that the body would have fallen into Zanjón de la Aguada.

Galdámez's family filed a report for presumed misfortune early last week after having no news of the youth. During the investigations, the PDI determined that the last person to see him alive was that same former schoolmate, who subsequently made a statement and confessed to the crime.

Operations in the sector where the homicide would have been committed began on Saturday, but yielded no positive results. The high flow of Zanjón de la Aguada, due to recent rainfall, hampered the underwater search operations.

Given that Zanjón de la Aguada empties into Río Mapocho, the search was also extended to that waterway. The Director General of the PDI, Eduardo Cerna, confirmed that the Underwater Operations Brigade is working this Monday in the riverbed. "There is information about sectors where it could be or where there could be some element that might allow us, hopefully, to find the body. So we are working on it," said Cerna.

To date, the PDI has not established the motive that would have driven the homicide.
