Carlos Cancino "El Rana" transferred to Santiago under special custody following preventive detention order
The man accused of the homicide of two Carabineros officers was transferred from Valdivia to the Metropolitan Region on Tuesday 21 July.

Carlos Esteban Cancino Tapia, alias "El Rana", was transferred from the Llancahue penal facility in Valdivia to the Metropolitan Region on the morning of Tuesday 21 July, according to diarioriobueno.cl. The operation involved a joint contingent of Gendarmería and Carabineros deployed specifically to secure the route.
The convoy of police vehicles departed at 10:45 hours from the penal facility in Valdivia. Both institutions coordinated the procedure to ensure the transfer of the detainee to Santiago.
On Monday 20, the Garantía Court in Temuco had ordered preventive detention for Cancino. Magistrate Caroline Guzmán granted the request from the Public Prosecutor's Office, which based the measure on the high dangerousness of the accused. Cancino appeared at the hearing remotely, given that he was injured during the police operation that enabled his capture the previous week in Valdivia.
The 28-year-old man was formally charged as the perpetrator of the completed offences of homicide of a carabineros officer on duty and unjustified firing of weapons, in addition to the attempted offences of homicide of a carabineros officer on duty and simple homicide.
Cancino is identified as one of those responsible for the death of Sergeant Eugenio Nain, which occurred in October 2020 in Metrenco, a district of Padre Las Casas. He was captured by the GOPE (specialised riot police unit) of Carabineros in the Punucapa sector in Valdivia.
Upon finding himself cornered by officers, Cancino opened fire and wounded subofficial Roberto Canío and first sergeant Marco Cosme. The latter received a gunshot wound to the face and was admitted to the intensive care unit of Valdivia Hospital, where he died the past weekend. The investigation against him has a timeline of 45 days.
